Mechanical Engineer

About the role

As a founding Mechanical Engineer, you'll design the physical vehicle: a slim, sealed hull that has to be light enough to fly and strong enough to dive. You'll work on folding rotor arms, waterproof seals, control surfaces and the structure that ties it all together, then help build and test it. If you like taking a part from CAD (Computer-Aided Design) to a 3D (three-dimensional) print to a pool test in the same week, this role is for you. We're still in design and actively prototyping.

What you'll work on

• Hull and structural design for a sealed, cylindrical vehicle
• The folding rotor arm mechanism that tucks the rotors away for underwater travel
• Sealing and waterproofing: O-rings, shaft seals and connector penetrations
• Hydroplanes and control surfaces for underwater steering
• Buoyancy, ballast and weight balance
• CAD modeling in SolidWorks, plus FEA (finite element analysis) and hydrodynamic analysis
• Prototyping with 3D printing and machining, then flight and pool testing

What we're looking for

• Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD software
• Hands-on fabrication or build experience
• Interest in drones, marine systems or robotics
• Comfort iterating quickly on physical prototypes

Nice to have

• FEA or CFD (computational fluid dynamics) experience
• Pressure vessel or marine design experience
• Composites or machining experience
• Drone or RC (radio control) building experience

Compensation

This is an equity-only role. There is no salary or hourly pay. As a founding team member you'll receive equity in Liminal Stratum, so you share directly in what we build together.

Location

Location: Boulder, Colorado. This role is in person. We build and test hardware together, so you must be local to Boulder. We are not considering remote applicants.
